DIY Moisturizing Face Cream with Essential Oils

I suffer with really dry skin in the winter. Like, reeeeeaaaaalllly dry skin. It’s awful some days! It’s chapped and red and bleeding. Lately I’ve been dealing with a lot of it on my face, which, one, looks bad, but, two, is very itchy and uncomfortable!

I started using this face cream recently to help ease some of this dryness, and it’s been wonderful! It’s soothing and moisturizing and smells fantastic. I call it face cream, but I like to use it on my hands, too! And, bonus, this makes a great balm for dry, frizzy hair as well! You can just scrunch a tiny bit through the ends of your hair!

I love adding essential oils to it because they are just so effective for our skin. Within 20 seconds essential oils can be absorbed into the bloodstream and used by our bodies where we need them! There are some fabulous essential oils for dealing with skin issues. I haven’t added them all, but I picked four that I love, that smell great together, and that work in a perfect combo for dealing with all of my skin issues.

Patchouli is earthy, and smells like the ground after rain. It has unique properties that make it perfect for soothing dry, cracked skin. It helps to regenerate skin cells, tighten and tone skin, and soothe swelling and irritation. It also has uplifting and soothing properties that can help boost your mood and help you feel relaxed. It’s a wonderful choice for your face because it can work well to mend scarred skin from acne and other skin blemishes. And it’s good for you because it helps to regulate hormones and boost immunity!

Vetiver is soothing and relaxing to skin. It’s grounding, soothing, and can help eliminate scars and other imperfections. It cleanses skin well by inhibiting the growth of bacteria and microbes, and it helps to speed up regeneration of skin tissues. . It can help improve sleep, helps to balance hormones, and is amazing for easing stress and and anxious feelings. It’s the perfect oil to help your skin rest and your body de-stress before bed. I love it because it has a deep earthy smell. If earthy isn’t your favorite, you could totally switch this for lavender and get some similar results!

Siberian Fir is one of my favorite oils on the planet. Maybe it’s partially because I grew up in So Cal and the smell of pines and mountains is ingrained in my bones. Siberian Fir takes me back there. But I also love it because it’s super soothing and it’s amazing for skin. Check out this cool study on how Siberian Fir affects wound care and soothes inflamed skin. I figured it would be an fitting addition to my cream and I’m so in love with the fragrance it adds!

Geranium is one of the best skin oils there are! It helps to calm skin inflammation, promotes healthy circulation, and cleanses really well! It can help to clear away dead skin cells, as well as trapped dirt and grime and other stuff that might be on your face. This makes geranium a perfect addition to my skin cream! Learn more about Geranuim here…

You could totally create your own combo! These are just oils that work well for me, but here are some ideas for other oils you could use:

  • For dry skin:  cedarwood, lavender, frankincense, helichrysum, myrrh, sandalwood, patchouli, and ylang ylang
  • For oily skin: cedarwood, helichrysum, lavender, melaleuca, lemon, grapefruit,
  • For scarring: frankincense, helichrysum, neroli, patchouli
  • For anti-aging: frankincense, helichrysum, sandalwood, rose, lavender, patchouli, neroli, jasmine, myrrh, and myrrh
  • For sensitive skin: lavender, helichrysum, geranium, roman chamomile, rose, frankincense
  • For acne-prone skin: melaleuca, geranium, lavender, lemon, grapefruit, and roman chamomile

To make this face cream, you’ll need a few basic ingredients.

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil, chilled
  • 1 tsp sunflower oil (I infuse mine with calendula! You can learn how to infuse oil here…)
  • 1/2 cup shea butter
  • 2 tsp beeswax, melted
  • 10 drops of each geranium, vetiver, siberian fir and patchouli (or your own blend!)

In a small double-boiler (or glass measuring jar over a small pan of water) melt the sunflower oil and beeswax until the wax is completely melted.

Meanwhile, whip the coconut oil and shea butter in the bowl of a stand-up mixer (or in a bowl with a hand mixer). Whip on medium-high speed for 1-2 minutes until it’s nice and creamy and stiff. Just be careful not to overwhip it or it can go flat. Stop when it’s nice and stiff!

Turn the blender on low speed and add in the beeswax (very slowly so you don’t melt the coconut oil!) and the essential oils (be prepared, vetiver goes VERY slow). Mix until just combined. It should have a nice velvety consistency.

Scoop into a clean swing-top jar or 8 oz jar with a lid (just needs to be glass or stainless, not plastic). Store in a cool place and use morning and night for a clean, soft face that’s deeply moisturized!
